Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learnt by doing the art of being a good vehicle to engage in social activism. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself via art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family was for many generations. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create an animated film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. While she was still studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for the broadcast media. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to observe the house of a member of the jury and go through their garbage. Her tasks left her disappointed in journalism, so she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small following her graduation from college. In 1999, she established her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye. She is a performer, most well-known for American Experience (1987) and A More Perfect Union (2009). Autumn was in the role in the roles of Rose and Anna Payne for A More Perfect Union.
